Dubai’s "Dubai Can Refill for Life" initiative is making a big difference in the fight against plastic waste. Since it started, the project has helped reduce the use of over 30 million single-use plastic water bottles, each 500 ml, in just three years. This initiative is part of the city's efforts to create a more sustainable future, aligning with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. Not only has it helped reduce plastic waste, but it has also provided more than 15 million liters of clean drinking water through 53 refill stations placed throughout Dubai.

The project was launched on February 15, 2022, by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai. The Dubai Can initiative has changed the way people in the city stay hydrated. It offers an eco-friendly way to drink water while raising awareness about the need to find alternatives to plastic. The initiative encourages residents and visitors to use refill stations instead of buying plastic water bottles. This is part of a larger push for sustainability in the city, including two important programs: Refill for Life and DUBAI REEF.

The problem of plastic waste is becoming a bigger issue worldwide. Plastic pollution harms the environment, and Dubai is taking steps to help reduce it. The Dubai Can initiative supports the UAE's goal to be more sustainable and contributes to several of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate action, and protecting life on land and in the water.

Yousuf Lootah, CEO of Strategy and Corporate Performance at the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), spoke about how proud the city is of the impact Dubai Can has had. He mentioned that the program is helping people make more conscious choices about the environment and is in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. This agenda aims to make Dubai the best place to live, work, and visit.

Dubai Can has been supported by a variety of key partners, including talabat, Dubai Municipality, and DMCC, who have helped spread the refill stations throughout the city. The refill stations are easy to use, free, and provide fresh, safe drinking water. These stations meet strict hygiene standards and are regularly tested to ensure the water is clean and safe for everyone.

The initiative has also been supported by Dubai Municipality, which has provided several free water refill stations at public parks, beaches, and facilities. Simonida Subotic, Vice President at talabat UAE, said the company is proud to be part of this project, noting the positive impact it has had on the community. She added that, as a tech company, talabat is committed to supporting sustainability efforts that drive change in the city.

Feryal Ahmadi, the COO at DMCC, said that the refill stations in Dubai's Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) area have helped eliminate almost two million plastic water bottles since they were introduced in 2022. The refill stations have become an important part of Dubai's sustainability efforts, and more are planned for 2025.

To make sure the water at these refill stations is always fresh and clean, it is maintained at a cool temperature of 10°C. The stations comply with all health and safety standards set by local authorities and international organizations like the World Health Organization. The goal is to offer everyone safe, accessible drinking water while helping to reduce the use of plastic bottles.

Each year, the average resident in the UAE uses around 450 plastic water bottles, which adds up to about 4 billion plastic bottles used across the country. Through Dubai Can, the city hopes to change these habits and prevent more plastic from ending up in landfills or oceans. The initiative helps everyone, whether they live in Dubai or are just visiting, make more sustainable choices for a cleaner environment.

Another major project under Dubai Can is DUBAI REEF, which aims to protect marine life and improve the health of Dubai’s oceans. Announced by Sheikh Hamdan at COP28 in December 2023, DUBAI REEF will create the world’s largest single-purpose reef. The project is already underway, with the first phase of deployment starting in November 2024. When completed, the reef will have 20,000 specially designed reef modules that will help protect marine biodiversity and improve fish populations in Dubai’s coastal waters.

Dubai Can and DUBAI REEF are helping Dubai lead the way in sustainability efforts, and with continued support from residents, visitors, and partners, the city aims to keep making progress in protecting the environment.
