Chennai and Neighboring Areas Battling Cyclone Michaung Impact

Cyclone Michaung, currently swirling over the Bay of Bengal and approaching the Andhra coast, has unleashed torrential rain across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The northern coastal regions, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, and Cuddalore districts, are experiencing heavy rainfall, with Thiruvallur district being particularly affected.

Chennai, the capital city, is grappling with severe waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas. The cyclone is anticipated to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam tomorrow noon.

Overnight, Meenambakkam recorded 196 mm of rainfall, while Nungambakkam received 154.3 mm in the 24 hours leading up to 5:30 am this morning. In response to the challenging conditions, schools, colleges, and government offices in Chennai and three adjoining districts will remain closed today. The state government has urged private companies to enable their employees to work from home.

Authorities have proactively established nearly 5,000 relief centers in coastal districts to assist those affected by the heavy rainfall. Chief Minister MK Stalin conducted a thorough review of safety measures last night and is closely monitoring the evolving situation.

As the region grapples with the impact of Cyclone Michaung, the coordination of relief efforts and the safety of residents remain top priorities for the local authorities.
