An Indian boy, a student in 8th grade, experienced a rare and serious eye injury while playing cricket with his friends. The incident happened in the parking lot of his apartment building when a cricket ball accidentally struck his left eye. Initially, the child felt pain, redness, and blurry vision. His family treated him with an ice pack, but his symptoms worsened, leading them to seek medical help.
A Rare Retinal Injury Diagnosed
The boy’s parents took him to Aster Clinic Bur Dubai (AJMC), where he was referred to Aster Hospital Mankhool for a detailed examination. Dr. Gazala Hasan Mansuri, an ophthalmology specialist, carried out a thorough check-up using advanced imaging tools like Fundus Photography and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). These tests revealed a giant retinal tear in his left eye, covering about 90 degrees of the retina.

Giant retinal tears are serious because they can cause retinal detachment, which can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated in time. This injury had put the boy at immediate risk, and urgent medical attention was required to save his vision.
Quick and Effective Treatment
Dr. Gazala recommended a non-invasive laser treatment called “prophylactic laser barrage” to seal the tear and prevent retinal detachment. The procedure was performed using a 532 nm Green Laser, which applied several rows of laser spots around the tear. This helped seal the affected area and stopped further damage. The treatment, which lasted only 15-20 minutes, was done under topical anaesthesia (numbing eye drops) to ensure the boy felt no pain.
The boy was discharged the same day and started his recovery process at home. Follow-up assessments confirmed that the treatment had successfully healed the retinal tears. His vision has since returned to normal, and the laser-treated areas are now fully healed.
Doctor’s Advice for Parents
Dr. Gazala emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for such injuries. She said, “Timely intervention with laser treatment saved this child’s vision. It’s very satisfying to see him recover and return to normal activities. I urge parents to immediately consult a specialist if their child suffers any eye injury. Acting quickly can prevent long-term damage.”
Understanding Giant Retinal Tears
Giant retinal tears are rare but serious conditions where the retina has a large tear covering more than 25% of its surface. Without treatment, they can lead to retinal detachment, one of the main causes of vision loss. These injuries are rare, occurring in only 0.09 per 100,000 people, but they are more likely to happen after a strong blow to the eye, such as in this case.
Retinal detachments in children account for 3.2% to 6.6% of all such cases, with an incidence rate of 0.38 to 0.69 per 100,000 children. Pediatric cases are particularly challenging to treat due to risks like scarring in the eye or the absence of certain natural eye changes that help with recovery in adults.
A Happy Ending
Thanks to quick action by his parents and the expertise of the medical team, the boy’s vision was saved. He is now fully recovered and back to his normal life, a reminder of how important timely medical care can be for eye injuries
