Just three hours from the UAE, Armenia is a hidden gem nestled in the Caucasus, offering a refreshing escape year-round. Surrounded by majestic mountains, this country captivates with its rich history and stunning landscapes.
As I settle at a long wooden table beneath the shadow of Mount Ararat, the air is filled with the aroma of locally produced cheese and fresh vegetables. This idyllic setting, reminiscent of the Alps, perfectly encapsulates Armenia's charm. With visa-free entry for Emiratis and an easy e-visa process for others, it’s an appealing choice for travelers seeking a unique getaway, especially during the hot Gulf months.
Armenia’s "velvet season," spanning from April to June and again in September and October, is ideal for outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy hiking, kayaking, zip-lining, and cultural tours during these comfortable months. While summer can be sweltering, it’s the perfect time for water sports at the country’s lakes and reservoirs. Winter, on the other hand, attracts ski enthusiasts eager to explore the snowy landscapes.

After arriving on a direct morning flight from Abu Dhabi, a short transfer brings me to Yerevan, Armenia’s historic capital. As one of the world’s oldest countries and the first to embrace Christianity, Armenia boasts a wealth of cultural and religious history. To navigate this fascinating backdrop, I join local tour guide Arpi, whose passion for her country is evident.
Our journey begins at Tufenkian Kharpert, a restaurant within my hotel, where we enjoy lunch surrounded by colorful carpets that reflect Armenian tradition. Known as the "Pink City" for its distinctive rose-hued tufa stone architecture, Yerevan offers a delightful mix of history and charm. Our first stop is the monumental Cascade Complex, a massive stairway built in the 1970s that connects the city center to the Haghtanak Park area. We opt for the indoor escalator, bypassing the daunting 500-plus steps.
The ascent rewards us with breathtaking views of Yerevan’s blend of modern and Soviet architecture against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. In the gardens below, we admire striking sculptures by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. To explore local art, we visit the Armenia Modern Art Museum, showcasing a carefully curated collection from Armenian artists and the diaspora.
Yerevan’s walkable streets make it easy to explore the city without needing taxis, a relief given the narrow ancient lanes that complicate traffic and parking.
The next morning, we venture outside Yerevan for a day trip, first stopping at Lake Sevan, the largest body of water in the Caucasus. Set on a rocky peninsula, the Sevanavank Monastery offers stunning views and a glimpse into medieval Armenian architecture. The fresh mountain air invigorates us as we take in the surrounding peaks.
Continuing to Dilijan, a spa town renowned for its mineral springs and lush greenery, we partake in a tolma-making class at Toon Armeni Little Village, learning to craft stuffed vine leaves amid picturesque hills.
That evening, we arrive at Apaga Resort in Yenokavan, a place that embodies the Armenian perspective of the future. The stone-built accommodations offer stunning valley views and a serene, back-to-basics ethos.
The following day, we tackle the zip line course at Yell Extreme Park, enjoying breathtaking views as we soar across the valleys. This family-friendly adventure welcomes all ages, emphasizing the country’s commitment to inclusive outdoor activities.
Our next destination is Garni, where Armenia’s last remaining pagan temple stands isolated on a cliff’s edge. Below, the Symphony of Stones, a natural formation of hexagonal columns formed by ancient lava, captivates with its beauty. After soaking in the sights, we hop into a 4x4 for a scenic drive to Azat Reservoir, where we enjoy a peaceful kayaking experience on its tranquil waters.
In Yeghegnadzor, we visit the impressive Noravank Monastery, nestled among towering red limestone cliffs. Despite not spotting any mountain goats, the grandeur of the landscape leaves a lasting impression.
For lunch, we gather at Old Bridge, where we savor regional dishes made from fresh, local ingredients. The owner’s son shares the history of the area, which was once a vital trade crossing along the Great Silk Road.
As I savor the delicious cuisine under the vibrant colors of Armenia’s flag, I reflect on the beauty of this remarkable country, its rich culture, and the warm hospitality of its people. Armenia’s effortless charm leaves an indelible mark, making it a destination that deserves to be explored time and again.
