Syria's new rulers seek more aid at EU conference

Since 2017, the European Union has held a meeting in Brussels every year to collect money to help Syria. In the past, Syria’s leader Bashar al-Assad was not invited because many people blamed him for the violence in the war that started in 2011.

But now, things are different. Assad was removed from power in December. This year, the EU hopes the meeting will bring a new beginning for Syria. However, they are still worried because of recent deadly fights between Syria’s new rulers and groups that still support Assad.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Syria is going through a very hard time. She spoke about the recent violence in some areas. But she also said there is hope because of a big agreement made on March 10. This agreement will allow the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who control the northeast of Syria with help from the US, to join Syria’s new government.

The group that removed Assad, called Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), is listed as a terrorist group by the United Nations. Still, EU leaders want to keep talking to them. But they say this will only continue if the new rulers promise to include everyone and keep peace in the country.

Syria’s new Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shibani, will be at the meeting. He will join ministers from Europe, Arab countries, and big international groups.

This year’s meeting is very important because the United States, under President Donald Trump, has cut a lot of aid money for Syria. Last year, the EU meeting raised €7.5 billion to help Syria. The EU itself promised to give €2.12 billion for 2024 and 2025.

Syria is in deep trouble. About 16.5 million people need help, and 12.9 million people do not have enough food. The war has destroyed much of the country. On top of that, the economy is very weak, and the Syrian pound has lost value. Almost everyone in Syria is now living in poverty.
