Newcastle United won the League Cup after beating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday. This was their first big trophy in 70 years.
Since new owners took over in 2021, Newcastle has bought many top players from different countries. But in this final, the hero was Dan Burn, a local player from Blyth.

Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton played with great energy. Sandro Tonali showed his skills, and Alexander Isak scored his 24th goal of the season, making fans love him even more.
The most important moment happened just before halftime. Newcastle got a corner, and 32-year-old Burn jumped high to head the ball into the net. This goal gave Newcastle the lead and changed the game.
Burn started playing football at Newcastle’s youth academy. But before returning to Newcastle in 2022, he played for smaller clubs like Darlington, Fulham, Yeovil Town, Birmingham City, Wigan, and Brighton.
This was a special week for Burn. On Friday, he got his first call to play for England. On Sunday, he scored his first goal of the season in a big final.
"I don’t want to sleep because it feels like a dream, and I don’t want it to end," Burn said. "I don’t score often, so I saved it for a big day."
But he won’t have much time to celebrate. He said he would join the England team at 8 a.m. on Monday.
Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, took charge after the club was bought by new owners. People thought Newcastle would win trophies quickly because of their money, but Howe first had to make sure the club stayed in the Premier League.
Last season, he helped Newcastle reach the Champions League. But in 2023, they lost the League Cup final to Manchester United, and their wait for a trophy continued.
Losing another final at Wembley would have been very painful for Newcastle and their fans, known as the Toon Army. But on Sunday, they played better than Liverpool, who are the top team in the Premier League this season.
"This is a great moment. This is why we love football," Howe said. His players poured beer on him while celebrating. "There are many hard days in football, and this club has suffered for years.
"I am so happy for the fans. After waiting so long, they finally have a trophy. I hope we can win more in the future.
"Today, we beat an amazing team, the best in the league this season, and we were the better side."
Speaking about Burn’s goal, Howe said, "What a week for him! He was excellent in defense. That was a fantastic header."
