Apple spoke out against Meta Platforms, saying that its many requests to use Apple’s software tools could put users' privacy and safety at risk. This shows the strong competition between the two big companies.

Under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which started last year, Apple must allow other companies and app developers to work with its services or face a fine of up to 10% of its yearly income worldwide.
Meta has asked Apple 15 times for access to its tools, more than any other company. Apple said that some of these requests want to change how its software works in ways that could hurt privacy and safety. These requests don’t seem related to Meta’s products, like Meta’s smart glasses or the Meta Quest, which is a virtual reality headset.
Apple warned that if it agreed to all of Meta’s requests, Meta could get access to private information, like reading all messages and emails, tracking phone calls, seeing which apps people use, scanning photos, checking files and calendar events, and even recording passwords.
Apple also pointed out that Meta has been fined in Europe before for privacy problems, which makes Apple even more worried about granting these requests.
Meta responded by saying that Apple does not want to work with other companies. A spokesperson for Meta said, “What Apple is really saying is they don’t believe in working together with others. When Apple is called out for unfair behavior, it says privacy concerns that aren’t true.”
Meanwhile, the European Commission, which checks if companies follow the rules in the DMA, released its early findings on the issue late Wednesday. The Commission asked people and companies to give their opinions on the rules for Apple by January 9.
The proposed rules would make Apple explain how it will handle requests from app developers. Apple would also need to give updates and find fair solutions if there are disagreements.
The Commission also said that Apple must allow access to its iOS notifications system for devices like Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, and future Apple devices.
The European Commission will decide in March next year if Apple is following the rules in the DMA.
