An Air Canada Express regional jet collided with a ground vehicle while landing at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night, causing injuries and forcing the airport to temporarily shut down.
According to flight tracking platform Flightradar24, the CRJ-900 aircraft, arriving from Montreal, struck the vehicle at a speed of around 24 miles per hour (39 km/h). The last recorded data from the aircraft was at 11:37 pm ET.
Images from the scene showed visible damage to the front of the aircraft, with its nose tilted upward after the impact.
Reports said four people were injured in the incident, which involved a fire truck operated by police personnel. The pilot and co-pilot of the aircraft were reported to be seriously injured, while two officers suffered broken limbs but were said to be in stable condition.
However, officials have not yet confirmed the exact details of the injuries.
The Federal Aviation Administration stated that the airport would remain closed until 2:00 pm ET on Monday. Several incoming flights were either diverted to other airports or returned to their origin.
The aircraft involved was operated by Jazz, a regional partner of Air Canada owned by Chorus Aviation. The CRJ-900 aircraft has a seating capacity of up to 76 passengers. Reports indicate that 76 passengers and four crew members were on board at the time of the incident.
Emergency services, including the New York Fire Department, responded quickly to the crash on Runway 4. Authorities have warned of possible road closures, delays, and heavy emergency presence in and around the airport area.
Investigations into the incident are expected to be carried out by the National Transportation Safety Board along with aviation authorities.
