Will Astronaut Sunita Williams Face Food, Oxygen Shortages? Survival Plan Revealed

Photo : X

NASA has confirmed that astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore will extend their stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) until February 2025, six months beyond the initial schedule. They will return to Earth aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, instead of the originally planned Boeing Starliner. This adjustment has raised concerns about their food and oxygen supplies, but NASA assures that there is no immediate danger to the crew.

The space agency stated that the ISS is well-stocked with essential supplies, including food, water, clothing, and oxygen. Regular resupply missions, with recent deliveries of spacecraft carrying "8,200 pounds of food, fuel, and supplies" and "three tons of cargo," will ensure that the crew’s needs are met throughout their extended mission.

NASA emphasized that the station’s provisions are sufficient to support the crew for the additional time, and there are plans in place to maintain their safety and well-being. The astronauts have access to various amenities on the ISS, including a gym equipped with the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) to maintain muscle mass and bone density. They also use the Vegetable Production System (Veggie garden) to grow fresh produce and flowers in space.

For their extended stay, Williams and Wilmore can also make video and audio calls, and send emails through NASA’s communications systems. Despite the delay in their return, the space station remains well-prepared for their extended stay, with continuous resupply missions planned.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson addressed the agency’s safety measures, highlighting the risks associated with spaceflight. He noted that the decision to keep the astronauts on the ISS and to conduct an uncrewed return flight for the Boeing Starliner underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety and success of space missions.
