Video: Biden's Standoff with Trump on Medicare Freezes Moment

During his first presidential debate against Republican rival and former President Donald Trump, US President Joe Biden faced a moment of stumbling and confusion that quickly became fodder for criticism. The 81-year-old leader, known for occasional verbal slips in public appearances, appeared to lose his train of thought while responding to a question on the economy from a CNN anchor.

A brief video clip captured Biden struggling to articulate his response, saying, "...making sure that we're able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I've been able to do with the with the COVID, excuse me, dealing with everything we have to do with..." He then made a gaffe by stating, "We finally beat Medicare."

Medicare, however, is a US government health insurance program for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities.

Trump wasted no time in seizing upon Biden's slip-up to criticize him, remarking, "He did beat Medicare. He beat it to death."

Biden's missteps continued during a discussion about voter sentiment under his presidency, where he erroneously claimed, "Unemployment rate rose to 15% [under Trump], it was terrible. And so what we had to do is try to put things back together again. That's exactly what we began to do. We created 15,000 new jobs," instead of correctly stating "15 million new jobs."

The debate, which lasted 90 minutes, was marked by heated exchanges between the two leaders on topics including the economy, democracy, military actions, and the impact of age on cognitive abilities.

Following the debate, Biden commented to reporters at a restaurant, mentioning a sore throat but expressing satisfaction with his performance: "I think we did well." Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged to CNN that Biden had a slow start but characterized his finish as strong, reflecting on the intensity and dynamics of the debate.

According to a CNN survey, 67% of viewers believed Trump emerged as the winner of the debate, highlighting the varying perceptions and reactions to the candidates' performance and exchanges.
