US Supreme Court Invalidates Trump-Era Ban on Gun 'Bump Stocks'

In Washington, the US Supreme Court delivered a significant ruling on Friday, declaring unconstitutional the Trump administration's ban on bump stocks. This decision arises from the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in US history, where a gunman used bump stock-equipped rifles to kill 58 people and wound hundreds in Las Vegas in October 2017.

The court's decision was split along ideological lines, with conservative justices prevailing in a 6-3 vote. Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the majority, asserted that bump stocks, which enable semi-automatic rifles to fire rapidly, do not qualify as "machineguns" under existing law. This decision overturned the Trump-era policy that classified bump stocks as illegal under a 1934 law banning machine guns.

The ruling has sparked polarized reactions. Proponents of gun rights, including the National Rifle Association (NRA), welcomed the decision as a check on executive branch overreach, emphasizing the role of legislative bodies in making laws. Conversely, critics, including President Joe Biden's campaign, condemned the ruling as prioritizing the interests of the gun lobby over public safety.

The case underscores longstanding debates over firearm regulations in the United States, particularly in the wake of tragic mass shootings. Advocates for stricter gun control laws argue that bump stocks facilitate high-capacity firing akin to automatic weapons, highlighting public opinion polls showing widespread support for their prohibition.

The legal battle centered on interpretations of firearms legislation dating back to the Prohibition era, with the Supreme Court ultimately siding with a narrower definition of what constitutes a machine gun. Liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented vigorously, arguing that the majority's decision contradicted Congress's intent and failed to address the dangers posed by rapid-fire devices.

The fallout from this ruling is expected to reignite discussions on gun policy in America, drawing attention to the intersection of constitutional rights and public safety in the ongoing debate over firearms regulation.
