In Houston, police in the US state of Texas have apprehended a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old Indian national during a robbery at a convenience store in Dallas. Dasari Gopikrishna, who had arrived in the US just eight months ago, was tragically shot and killed at the convenience store in Pleasant Grove, Dallas, on June 21. Originally from the Yajali village in the Bapatla district of Andhra Pradesh, Gopikrishna's untimely death has sent shockwaves through his community.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Davonta Mathis, has been arrested and is now facing capital murder charges for the brutal killing of Gopikrishna. According to police reports, Mathis entered the store, approached the counter, and shot Gopikrishna multiple times, including a fatal shot to the head. After committing the heinous act, Mathis proceeded to steal several items before fleeing the scene.

Emergency services quickly arrived and transported Gopikrishna to the hospital in critical condition, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Initially charged with robbery, Mathis's charges were escalated to capital murder following Gopikrishna's death. The bond for Mathis has been set at USD 7.5 million.

Sgt. Curtis Phillip of the Mesquite Police Department described Mathis's behavior as "very bizarre" and highlighted the profound impact of his actions at such a young age. In addition to this case, Mathis is also implicated in another fatal shooting in Waco on June 20, where he allegedly shot 60-year-old Muhammad Hussain multiple times, leading to Hussain's death at the hospital.

The Indian consulate in Houston is working closely with Gopikrishna's family to make arrangements for repatriating his body to India. Representatives from the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) and family friends are assisting in coordinating the transportation of his body back to his hometown. The consulate has confirmed that all necessary formalities, including police autopsies, have been completed, and they are prioritizing the shipment of Gopikrishna's body by Tuesday.

The tragic incident has left a significant impact on the Indian community in Dallas and its surrounding areas. Gopikrishna's death marks the second fatal incident involving a convenience store clerk working the night shift within a span of two days. The community is deeply mourning the loss of Gopikrishna, who is survived by his wife and young son.

As the legal proceedings against Mathis continue, the community remains focused on supporting Gopikrishna's family during this difficult time. The collaboration between the Indian consulate, TANA, and local community members exemplifies the collective effort to honor Gopikrishna's memory and provide solace to his grieving family.

The shocking nature of this crime has also brought attention to the broader issue of violence against convenience store workers, prompting discussions on the need for enhanced security measures to protect employees, especially those working late-night shifts. As Gopikrishna's family prepares to bring him back home, the entire community stands in solidarity, hoping for justice and a resolution to this tragic event.
