US Man Opens Fire at Children's Water Park, Injuring 8-Year-Old

On Saturday evening, a gunman opened fire at a children’s water park in Rochester Hills, Michigan, injuring several people, including two children—one of whom is just 8 years old. The Oakland County Sheriff, Michael Bouchard, reported that the shooter was later found dead inside a nearby home where he had been hiding.

The police revealed that the attack occurred at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad and resulted in "nine, maybe 10" victims being injured and rushed to the hospital. The police department posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the splash pad on Auburn Road in Rochester Hills was the site of the active shooting. They requested that the public stay away from the area while they secured the crime scene and attended to the wounded.

According to Sheriff Bouchard, the suspect arrived at the splash pad around 5 pm, exiting his vehicle and immediately beginning to shoot. The gunman fired approximately 28 shots, reloading his weapon multiple times during the assault. Although the motive for the shooting remains unknown, authorities believe the attack was random.

Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett confirmed that the scene had been secured by the police and that the Rochester Hills Fire Department was also present. "We appreciate everyone's patience as we work through this. Prayers are with all those involved. We will share more updates as we have information," Mayor Barnett said in a statement.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Sheriff Bouchard described the incident as a "gut punch" to a community still healing from the 2021 shooting at a nearby high school, where four students lost their lives. "We're not even fully comprehending what happened at Oxford, and now we have another complete tragedy that we're dealing with," he lamented.

This incident adds to the grim tally of mass shootings in the United States, with over 215 such events reported so far in 2024.
