US Charges 193 in $2.75B Health Care Fraud Bust The US Justice Department has announced criminal charges against 193 individuals, including 76 medical professionals, for their involvement in health care fraud schemes totaling $2.75 billion. Among those targeted are doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel accused of fraudulent practices, including illegal distribution of millions of Adderall pills over a two-week operation.
The crackdown also uncovered $176 million in fraudulent activities related to drug and alcohol abuse treatment. Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted cases where Medicaid was billed for inadequate or non-existent treatment. Additionally, 36 defendants were charged for submitting false claims worth over $1.1 billion to Medicare through telemedicine schemes.

During a press conference, Garland emphasized the Justice Department's commitment to prosecuting individuals who defraud taxpayer-funded programs, endangering public health for financial gain. The enforcement action spanned 32 federal districts, resulting in the seizure of more than $231 million in assets, including cash, luxury vehicles, and gold.
In one instance, seven individuals associated with the telehealth startup Done Global, based in San Francisco, were charged with illegally distributing Adderall. Allegations include a nurse practitioner prescribing 1.5 million pills with minimal patient interaction. The company's founder and top doctor had previously faced charges related to the scheme.
Authorities suspect these fraud schemes contributed to nationwide shortages of Adderall in recent years. Investigations were conducted by the Justice Department's criminal fraud unit in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, FBI, and Drug Enforcement Administration. Officials highlighted the use of data analytics to detect schemes jeopardizing patient safety and government resources.
