The Department of Geography and Urban Sustainability at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has announced a new PhD programme in Geographic Information Science (GIS) for the 2025 school year. This programme is designed to meet the growing need for experts in GIS and Remote Sensing. These tools help study important topics like climate change, population growth, natural disasters, and coastal management.
Prof. Mohamed Bin Huwaidin, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, said this new PhD programme will help students gain high-level knowledge in GIS. He also mentioned that the programme will help students make important contributions to the UAE’s goal of improving technology and innovation.

Prof. Naeema Al Hosani, Chair of the Department of Geography and Urban Sustainability, said the programme will give students deep knowledge of GIS. It will also help them improve their skills in research, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The programme will encourage students to work on important research that will help solve environmental and economic problems in the UAE and around the world.
The PhD programme will require students to complete 54 credit hours. This includes both courses and a research thesis. The courses will teach topics like spatial analysis, GIS programming, and accuracy testing. Students will also have to take an exam to show they are ready for research before starting their thesis.
This PhD programme will help students become experts who can help improve the UAE’s technology and geographical systems. It will also support the country’s plan to grow in technology and innovation.
