Mookie Betts Hits Two Homers After Battling Stomach Virus

Mookie Betts is feeling better now. He was very sick for the first two weeks of the season because of a stomach virus. He could not eat and lost a lot of weight. But now, he can eat again, and he is trying to gain back the weight he lost.

Even though he is still not at full strength, Betts showed that he is still an amazing baseball player. On Friday night, he hit two home runs. One of them was in the 10th inning and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win 8-5 against the Detroit Tigers. His home run brought three runs, helping the Dodgers make a big comeback and stay undefeated this season.

“This was not something I expected,” Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts said. “Mookie always does something special.”

The Dodgers are now 4-0 for the first time since 1981. That was the year they won the World Series. Betts hit his first home run of the season in the eighth inning, helping the Dodgers take the lead for the first time in the game. Then, in the 10th inning, he hit another home run that won the game.

“Right now, I am just having fun hitting home runs at 160 pounds,” Betts said, smiling.

On this special night, the Dodgers also received their World Series rings. But for Betts, the night was about more than baseball. The past few weeks were hard for him. He had traveled with the team to Japan for the opening games against the Chicago Cubs, but he got so sick that he had to fly back home before playing.

“I lost almost 15 pounds. I could not eat, and I felt really bad,” Betts said. “It was scary because I didn’t know what was wrong with me.”

Now, he is trying to gain weight. “I weigh 165 pounds now. I want to gain seven or eight more pounds, but 10 would be perfect,” he said. His plan is simple: “Eat all day. My wife and my chef are cooking a lot, and I am even eating during the game.”

When he hit the game-winning home run, it was an emotional moment. As he rounded the bases, he pumped his fist. He was thinking about all the tough days he had when he was sick.

“There were nights when I cried because I felt so bad,” Betts shared. “My wife was with me, holding me. That’s why I felt so much emotion.”

As he reached home plate, he threw his helmet and jumped with excitement. His teammates ran to him and poured water on him in celebration.

“I can’t say enough about Mookie,” Roberts said. “He won the game for us.”

Betts came up to bat in the 10th inning after Will Smith and Shohei Ohtani got on base. He knew that even if he didn’t hit a home run, Freddie Freeman was up next, and he is also great in these moments.

“I felt relaxed. If I hit it, great. If not, Freddie was there,” Betts said.

But he did hit it. And as he thought about everything, he smiled and said, “I know it sounds selfish, but I was really proud of myself.”

This game was not just about winning. For Betts, it was about proving to himself that he was back.
