Sabalenka Triumphs Over Pegula to Win Miami Open 7-5 6-2

Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka defeated American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 to win the Miami Open on Saturday. Sabalenka used her strong forehand and powerful game to claim her eighth WTA 1000 title. After a tough loss in the final at Indian Wells earlier this month and at the Australian Open in January, Sabalenka was determined not to settle for second place this time. She ended the match with a fantastic backhand shot down the line and raised her hands in celebration.

Pegula, who is ranked fourth, had been hoping to take revenge on Sabalenka after losing to her in the 2023 U.S. Open final. But despite starting off strong, the 31-year-old American could not match Sabalenka’s power and struggled to keep up as the match went on.

"Thank you everyone for supporting me every day. I really enjoyed playing in front of you," Sabalenka said to the crowd. She had struggled at this tournament in the past, never going past the quarter-finals, but this time she finally claimed the title.

In the first set, the two players broke each other's serve three times. Sabalenka took control in the final game of the set. She hit a powerful 90-mile-per-hour shot down the line and forced Pegula to make a mistake, winning the set 7-5.

In the second set, Pegula showed her best form early on. She made Sabalenka run back and forth across the court and broke her serve with a great backhand winner. But Sabalenka quickly fought back. She broke Pegula’s serve in the second game and then took control of the match.

Pegula fought hard, saving three break points in the fourth game, but Sabalenka didn’t give up. When Pegula allowed Sabalenka another break point, Sabalenka took it and broke her serve again. The Belarusian finished the match with one more break, winning the second set 6-2 to seal the victory.

After the match, Sabalenka was apologetic during her trophy ceremony, especially since the match had been delayed by rain. "Thank you that the rain stopped. It felt like Miami was crying because I won this tournament," she said.

Sabalenka never dropped a set throughout the tournament. She defeated former champion Danielle Collins in the round of 16, the Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the quarter-finals, and the sixth seed Jasmine Paolini in the semi-finals to reach the final.

This victory in Miami marked a huge achievement for Sabalenka, who has now won her eighth WTA 1000 title and is showing why she’s one of the top players in the world.
