A massive earthquake in Myanmar has caused severe damage, and the death toll continues to rise. As of Saturday, the country’s ruling government reported that 1,644 people have died, and 3,408 others are injured. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.7, struck on Friday, northwest of the city of Sagaing, in central Myanmar. The earthquake caused widespread destruction across large parts of the country.
In nearby Thailand, rescuers are working hard to save workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in Bangkok. The 33-story building, which was still under construction, collapsed during the earthquake. Dozens of workers were trapped inside. Sadly, no one has been found alive, and it is believed that most of the workers are dead. A police officer in Bangkok said that the chances of finding survivors are less than 1%. They will need up to two months to clear all the debris. As of now, 17 people have been confirmed dead, and 70 more workers are still feared trapped.

The Indian Navy has sent two ships, Satpura and Savitri, from its Eastern Naval Command to Myanmar's capital, Yangon, carrying relief materials. Two more ships from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Karmuk and LCU 52, are also on their way to help with the rescue efforts.
A second earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1, hit Myanmar on Saturday afternoon near Mandalay, causing more damage and fear of aftershocks. This is the latest in a series of aftershocks since the first earthquake struck on Friday.
In Bangkok, the collapse of the 33-story building is being investigated. The building was a joint project between an Italian-Thai construction company and a Chinese construction firm. Many are concerned about why the building collapsed so suddenly.
The United Nations has raised concerns that the rescue efforts in Myanmar are being slowed down by a lack of medical supplies and damaged roads. The UN and other organizations are working to bring help, but the scale of the disaster is so large that urgent aid is needed.
Meanwhile, anti-coup fighters in Myanmar, who are part of the country's opposition to the military government, have declared a two-week break in their fighting. This pause will allow for rescue efforts in areas affected by the earthquake. The government in exile, known as the National Unity Government, said it would work with the UN and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to ensure safety and provide medical care in the areas under its control.
Other countries in the region have sent warships and aircraft to Myanmar, bringing much-needed supplies and rescue workers. According to Myanmar's military leader, the country’s hospitals and healthcare workers must work together to provide help as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The damage caused by the earthquake is expected to be huge. Experts from the United States have said that the death toll in Myanmar could rise to over 10,000, and the damage could be greater than the country's entire yearly income.
Back in Bangkok, rescue teams are working non-stop to find survivors under the collapsed building. Over 70 workers are still trapped, and so far, only two bodies have been recovered. Huge cranes and many rescuers have been brought in to help search through the rubble.
In Myanmar, the earthquake caused severe damage to major roads and bridges. This has made it very difficult for rescue teams to reach people in need of help. The UN said that damage to key highways, like the Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw-Mandalay expressway, has disrupted bus services.
As of Sunday, 137 tonnes of aid have been sent to Myanmar by air and naval ships, and more is expected to be sent in the coming days. India was the first to send rescue teams to help with the disaster in Myanmar.
The earthquake’s destruction continues to unfold, and many countries are working together to provide the necessary help. The people of Myanmar and Thailand are facing enormous challenges, but international aid and support continue to flow in.
