Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has opened two new marine bridges connecting Al Reem Island directly to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Highway (E‑12).
Designed to carry up to 7,200 vehicles per hour, the new route is expected to cut travel times by 60%, saving commuters around 15 minutes during peak hours.
The AED 450 million project also improves journeys between Al Reem and Saadiyat Islands, as well as the Dubai-bound highway. By easing congestion on Hamdan Bin Mohammed Street and Mina Road, the bridges enhance local traffic flow significantly. A dedicated freight U-turn bridge between Zayed Port and Saadiyat Island boosts logistics and overall road safety.
His Excellency Eng Eisa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director General of Infrastructure Development at DMT, said: “We are focused on building a transport network that is efficient, safe, and ready to support the capital’s growth. This project ensures smooth mobility across Abu Dhabi while upholding high design and sustainability standards.”
Spanning a total of 1.5 km with over 25,000 square metres of surface area, the bridges were constructed using advanced cast-in-situ box girder technology for durability. Twelve V‑shaped piers provide clear passage for marine traffic. Additional features include a 2 km elevated roadway, 71 streetlights, landscaped areas, and 2 km of pedestrian and cycling tracks.
The construction phase involved around 5 million man-hours and used 35,000 cubic metres of concrete, reflecting the scale and quality of this major infrastructure project.
