Former US President Donald Trump praised Elon Musk after NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore safely returned to Earth. The two astronauts were stuck in space for nine months before they were brought back by SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule.
Trump blamed President Joe Biden for leaving the astronauts behind. He said that when he was in office, he asked Musk to help. “When I got into office, I said, ‘Elon, we gotta get them out of there,’” Trump shared. He called Musk a “patriot” and praised his skills. “Elon is able to do that with his genius, yet some people hate it, and I believe they hate our country,” Trump added.

After the astronauts returned, Musk thanked Trump for supporting the mission. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Congrats to the @SpaceX and @NASA teams for another safe astronaut return! Thank you to @POTUS for making this mission a priority!”
The astronauts landed safely on Tuesday, March 18, just before 6 pm EST. Their SpaceX capsule, named Dragon Freedom, splashed down off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida. A SpaceX staff member radioed the crew, saying, “Butch, Suni, on behalf of SpaceX, welcome home.”
The White House also celebrated the success. They posted on X, "PROMISE MADE, PROMISE KEPT: President Trump promised to bring the astronauts back. Today, they safely landed in the Gulf of America, thanks to @ElonMusk, @SpaceX, and @NASA!”
Trump said he plans to invite Williams and Wilmore to the Oval Office once they recover. Speaking to anchor Laura Ingraham, Trump said, “First, they have to get better. You know, when you’re in space, you lose muscle strength. You have no gravity, so you can lift heavy things easily.”
He added that it will take time for the astronauts to heal. “It’s going to be hard for them. It’s not easy. They were up there for a long time. Once they recover, they’ll come to the Oval Office,” he said.
The astronauts' safe return is being seen as a big success for SpaceX, NASA, and Musk, showing the power of teamwork in space missions.
