The first named storm of the hurricane season, Tropical Storm Alberto, made landfall in Mexico on Thursday, bringing with it heavy rain and widespread flooding along the Gulf Coast and into Texas. Alberto weakened as it traversed Mexico but continued to impact the region with rain and gusty winds, particularly along the Texas coast.
The storm was tragically linked to at least four deaths in Mexico. Authorities in Nuevo León reported that one man drowned in the La Silla River in Monterrey, while two minors died from electric shocks in Allende due to the storm. In El Carmen, Nuevo León, another man was electrocuted while attempting to repair wires during the rainy conditions.
In Texas, where Alberto also caused significant disruption, Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration covering 51 counties to ensure adequate resources for response efforts. The storm prompted moderate to severe flooding in parts of the state, transforming streets into waterways and prompting warnings from the National Weather Service for residents to stock up on essential supplies.

Emergency services in Texas were mobilized ahead of the storm's arrival. The Texas A&M Forest Service deployed multiple teams and the Texas National Guard positioned personnel and vehicles, including helicopters, to assist with rescue and relief operations.
As Alberto continued its path, it coincided with a heat wave affecting over 82 million people under heat advisories across various states. This dual impact compounded challenges for residents and emergency responders alike.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had earlier predicted an active hurricane season, forecasting between 17 to 25 named storms and up to 13 hurricanes, with potentially four major hurricanes. Alberto's early activity underscored the need for preparedness throughout the hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30.
The situation remains dynamic as recovery efforts continue in affected areas, highlighting the resilience and readiness required during the ongoing hurricane season.
