Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and her fellow NASA astronaut, Butch Wilmore, who launched aboard Boeing's Starliner on June 5, 2024, are set to remain in space until February 2025. Originally scheduled for an eight-day mission, their stay has been extended due to technical issues encountered by the spacecraft.
Williams and Wilmore embarked on the Starliner’s first crewed mission, which was designed to demonstrate the spacecraft’s capabilities. However, their return to Earth was delayed when the Starliner encountered several technical difficulties, including helium leaks and problems with its reaction control thrusters. These issues led to the spacecraft returning to Earth without the astronauts last week.
In a video press conference, Williams described her extended stay on the International Space Station (ISS) as her "happy place," emphasizing her enjoyment of being in space. Despite the unexpected length of their mission, Williams expressed enthusiasm for her time on the ISS. “This is my happy place. I love being up here in space,” she said.

The transition to life aboard the ISS has been relatively smooth for both astronauts, who are seasoned space travelers. Williams noted that their previous experience on the station has made the adjustment easier. “We wanted to take Starliner to completion and land back at home, but you know, you have to turn the page and look at the next opportunity,” she added.
The astronauts are now scheduled to return to Earth on SpaceX’s Crew-9 flight, which is expected to launch in February 2025. Williams admitted to feeling some anxiety about the delay, particularly concerning plans she had for the fall and winter with her family. “In the back of my mind, there are folks on the ground who have some plans, like spending time with my mother. I was fretting more about that, but everybody was on board and that prepared us,” she explained.
Wilmore, for his part, expressed no disappointment about the extended mission. He indicated there were internal disagreements regarding the handling of the return but maintained a positive outlook. “We could have reached a point where we could have returned on Starliner, but we simply ran out of time. We found some issues that we couldn’t be comfortable with putting us back in the Starliner when other options were available,” he said.
In a unique twist, both astronauts will participate in the 2024 U.S. presidential election from space. Williams and Wilmore will cast their ballots from the ISS, with Wilmore having already requested his ballot. “It is a very important role that we all play as American citizens,” Wilmore stated, with Williams echoing his sentiments, calling it a “very important duty” and noting how “cool” it is to vote from space.
The 2024 U.S. election, scheduled for November 5, will feature a contest between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.
Boeing's Starliner Faces Setbacks
Boeing’s Starliner, which launched on June 5, 2024, carrying Williams and Wilmore, faced significant setbacks shortly after lift-off. The spacecraft, designed to transport astronauts to the ISS, encountered critical issues as it approached the station. Helium leaks and failures in five of the spacecraft's 28 thrusters raised concerns about its ability to achieve the necessary thrust for a safe return to Earth.
Despite successfully docking with the ISS, the decision was made to transfer the astronauts to a SpaceX mission for their return. NASA and Boeing determined that the Starliner would not be able to safely return the astronauts due to the identified technical problems. As a result, the Starliner returned to Earth empty, while Williams and Wilmore continue their mission aboard the ISS.
