The Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi (DCD), with support from the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), the Abu Dhabi Social Support Authority (SSA), and the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an, has launched a project to retrofit homes of 150 social support beneficiaries. The goal is to reduce electricity and water use by replacing old appliances with modern, energy-efficient ones.

The initiative is part of a larger effort to raise awareness about resource conservation in Abu Dhabi. It promotes sustainable living by equipping homes with advanced appliances and tools that control water and power use. This will help lower household expenses while ensuring comfortable living conditions.
The 150 beneficiaries, identified by the SSA, will have the option to choose from three plans: traditional, modern, or smart. Each plan is designed to maximize efficiency while catering to the specific needs of each household. By switching to energy-saving systems, the families are expected to reduce their annual bills, easing their financial burden.
This project also reflects the DCD’s commitment to improving the quality of life for social support recipients. Through partnerships with government and private organizations, the department aims to create long-term solutions that enhance living standards.
Her Excellency Shaikha Alhosani, Executive Director of the Social Monitoring and Innovation Sector at DCD, emphasized that sustainability is key to Abu Dhabi’s future. She highlighted the importance of educating the public on eco-friendly practices, saying that every individual has a role in protecting natural resources. By making green habits a part of daily life, the community can help build a sustainable future.
She added that the retrofitting project is part of a larger plan to tackle social, environmental, and economic challenges. By collaborating with leading public and private organizations, the initiative aims to create innovative solutions that benefit the entire community.
Engineer Ahmed Jumaa Al Falasi, Acting Executive Director of the Energy Efficiency Sector at the DoE, said the project supports the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030. The plan encourages responsible water and electricity use to minimize waste and cut energy costs for local families.
Al Falasi explained that by targeting 150 high-consuming households, the project could save up to 3,000 megawatt-hours of electricity each year. This is equivalent to lighting 150 homes for an entire year. Additionally, the project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 1,300 tons annually, contributing to a cleaner environment.
His Excellency Qasim Al Hashimi, Executive Director of Beneficiary Affairs at SSA, stressed the importance of involving families in sustainability programs. He said that small changes in daily routines, like using energy-efficient light bulbs and adopting water-saving practices, can have a big impact on both the environment and household expenses.
Al Hashimi highlighted that the project aims to raise environmental awareness and improve financial stability for families. By teaching simple, effective ways to cut down on electricity and water use, the initiative promotes long-term behavioral change.
His Excellency Faisal Alhmoudi, Executive Director of the Social Investment Fund at Ma’an, said the organization is committed to driving social development in Abu Dhabi. Through the Social Investment Fund, Ma’an raises financial support for initiatives that tackle pressing social challenges.
Alhmoudi emphasized that the retrofitting project will have a lasting impact on the community. By promoting sustainable practices, it will improve living standards and inspire more people to adopt eco-friendly habits.
The project also reflects Abu Dhabi’s Year of the Community theme, which promotes collaboration and shared responsibility. Through joint efforts between public and private sectors, the initiative aims to create meaningful change that benefits both individual households and the wider society.
