As part of its ongoing 'Academic Degree' project, the Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre is celebrating a special honor given to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. In 2008, the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Arab and Islamic culture and heritage. The award also acknowledged his efforts in promoting understanding and cooperation between different cultures and civilizations.

The University of Sheffield, a well-known British university established in 1828, granted this prestigious honor to the Sharjah Ruler for his remarkable role in advancing education, culture, and the arts in the UAE. His Highness has played a key part in the development of Sharjah and has worked tirelessly to make the emirate a hub of learning and progress.

During the award ceremony, His Highness was welcomed by Sir Peter Middleton, Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, along with Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett, Deputy Vice Chancellor for External Relations Professor Dominic Shellard, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr. David Fletcher. Many faculty members, department heads, professors, and university officials were also present.

Before the official ceremony, His Highness met with university officials to discuss possible collaborations between the University of Sheffield and the University of Sharjah. Following this, he was dressed in the university’s traditional doctoral gown and led a formal procession to the main hall, where the honorary doctorate was presented.

As part of the event, students from the University of Sheffield performed a theatrical play titled Nimrod, written by the Sharjah Ruler himself. This performance highlighted the importance of cultural and creative exchange in strengthening artistic and academic connections between institutions.

Dr. David Fletcher, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, praised His Highness for his lifelong efforts to modernize Sharjah in all aspects, including education, culture, and social development. Sir Peter Middleton, the Chancellor, also recognized His Highness’s dedication to preserving Arab and Islamic heritage, which led to Sharjah being named the Arab Cultural Capital by UNESCO in 1998. He further emphasized the Sharjah Ruler’s contributions to education, scientific research, and global academic partnerships.

The Chancellor expressed his pride in the University of Sheffield’s collaboration with the University of Sharjah, especially in offering a bachelor's degree program in biotechnology. He also spoke about His Highness’s academic journey, leadership, and achievements over the years. Finally, Sir Peter Middleton officially invited His Highness to accept the honorary doctorate in literature, describing it as a great privilege for the university to award this degree to such a distinguished leader.

The Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre launched the ‘Academic Degree’ project in November 2024 to showcase the various academic honors and degrees received by the Sharjah Ruler from prestigious universities around the world. This project will continue for a full year, highlighting His Highness’s scientific, intellectual, and cultural accomplishments. Through this initiative, the Centre aims to shed light on the global recognition of His Highness’s efforts in promoting education and culture.
