French Daycare Worker Gets 25 Years for Baby's Death

Post by: Bandan Preet

A court in Lyon, France, has sentenced a 30-year-old woman, Myriam Jaouen, to 25 years in prison for causing the death of a baby girl named Lisa in 2022. The court found her guilty of “torture” and “barbarism resulting in death,” but said she did not intend to kill the baby.

The incident happened in June 2022. Jaouen was working alone in a private daycare when baby Lisa’s father dropped her off. Just a few minutes later, two other mothers arrived with their children and saw Jaouen in a panic. Baby Lisa was vomiting and in great pain. She was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, she died a few hours later. It was later discovered that the baby had been given drain cleaner—a strong and harmful chemical used for cleaning pipes.

During the police investigation, Jaouen admitted that she had poured the liquid into the baby's mouth. She told officers that she did it because she couldn't stand the baby's crying anymore. At first, she gave different stories about what happened, but during the trial, she admitted to holding the baby’s head and forcing her to drink the chemical. However, she claimed that she never meant to kill the baby.

The prosecutor, Baptiste Godreau, called the act “unfathomable” and said that Jaouen was fully aware of what she was doing. He said the crime was very serious and the long prison sentence was necessary—not just to punish Jaouen, but also to protect other children and support the grieving family. He also said Jaouen acted in a “cowardly” way because she didn’t call for help, hid the bottle of cleaner, and continued her day as if nothing had happened—even going shopping afterward.

Baby Lisa’s parents were very upset by the verdict. Their lawyer, Catherine Bourgade, said they were shocked that Jaouen wasn’t found guilty of murder. The parents felt as if they had lost their child “twice”—once to the terrible incident and again through the court’s decision. “Who pours drain cleaner into a baby’s mouth and then says they didn’t mean to kill her?” Bourgade asked. She also said she hopes the prosecutors will appeal the decision to get a murder conviction.

During the trial, Jaouen showed little emotion. She is partially deaf and had a troubled past, including a difficult time in school and unstable jobs. She was living with her parents at the time of the incident. Despite not having much experience, she was hired by a well-known private daycare company called People and Baby.

This tragic case caused a wave of anger across France. The public and the government launched investigations into private daycare centers after the news broke. Many people began to worry about the safety and quality of care in such facilities.

At the trial, Lisa’s heartbroken parents described Jaouen as the “monster” who took their baby girl away.
