Sri Lanka Detains 60 Indian Nationals for Illegal Operations

COLOMBO: The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Sri Lanka has detained 60 Indian nationals involved in an extensive online financial scam operation. The arrests were carried out following coordinated raids in Colombo suburbs Madiwela and Battaramulla, as well as in the coastal town of Negombo. According to SSP Nihal Thalduwa, spokesperson for the Sri Lankan police, these raids resulted in the seizure of 135 mobile phones and 57 laptops, crucial pieces of evidence in the ongoing investigation.

The crackdown was prompted by a complaint from a victim who had been enticed into joining a WhatsApp group promising cash rewards for participating in social media activities. Further investigation revealed a sophisticated scheme where victims were coerced into making deposits after initial payments, exploiting their trust and financial vulnerabilities. In Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, a father-son duo confessed to assisting the fraudsters, revealing deeper local ties to the scam network, as reported by the Daily Mirror Lanka newspaper.

Significant progress was made during a raid on a luxury residence in Negombo, which led to the initial apprehension of 13 suspects and the seizure of 57 mobile phones and computers. Subsequent operations in Negombo yielded 19 additional arrests, uncovering international connections stretching to Dubai and Afghanistan. The investigation highlighted that victims spanned across Sri Lanka and included both local residents and foreigners, underscoring the widespread impact of the scam.

Authorities suspect the detained individuals were engaged in various illicit activities beyond financial fraud, including illegal betting and other forms of gambling. The case underscores the growing challenge of transnational cybercrime and the importance of international cooperation in combating such criminal networks.
