Ten skiers are reported missing, and at least six others are stranded after an avalanche hit a backcountry slope in California’s Sierra Nevada on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the Castle Peak area near Truckee, about 10 miles north of Lake Tahoe. The group included 12 clients and four ski guides. At least six skiers survived and were waiting for rescue, while the others remain unaccounted for.
Rescue operations were delayed as darkness fell and a nearby highway was closed due to zero visibility during the ongoing winter storm. Authorities from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said teams had not yet reached the avalanche site.
Captain Russell Greene of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that efforts are ongoing to reach all stranded skiers safely.
