President Sheikh Mohamed issued a directive on Thursday to clear outstanding fees amounting to Dh155 million for pupils residing in the UAE and attending government schools. While government education is predominantly free for most students, approximately 20 percent are subject to fees. The initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens on families by settling debts accrued up to the academic year 2023-2024, as reported by the state news agency Wam.

Operated in collaboration with the Emirates School Education Foundation, the initiative targets pupils enrolled in government-run schools. Eligible beneficiaries include Emirati children, UAE passport holders, GCC citizens, and individuals under decrees issued by Sheikh Mohamed. Additionally, non-qualifying students can enroll in government schools for a tuition fee of Dh6,000, provided specific conditions are met:
1. Registration is limited to Years 2 through 12.
2. Guardians must be employed in a government, semi-government, or local entity.
3. Pupils must maintain a minimum grade of 85 percent in Arabic, English, and mathematics.
4. Both the pupil and their guardian must possess a valid residence permit.
5. The proportion of expatriate pupils cannot exceed 20 percent in each government school and class.
Government school curricula primarily consist of Arabic-based instruction across all subjects, with English taught as a secondary language. This initiative underscores the UAE's commitment to providing accessible education to its residents while addressing financial barriers that may hinder academic participation.
