Russian Strikes in Northern Ukraine Cut Power and Water for Thousands

Photo : AP

Overnight Russian airstrikes have severely disrupted life in northern Ukraine, with over 100,000 households left without power and the water supply to Sumy, the regional capital, cut off. According to Ukrainian authorities, the strikes targeted energy infrastructure in the Sumy region, which borders Russia, causing widespread power outages. Shortly after, Ukrainian media reported that Russian drones hit Sumy city, damaging power lines crucial for its water supply pumps.

In addition to the infrastructure damage in Sumy, reports from Russian state agency RIA indicated strikes on a rocket ammunition plant in the city, though details on the weapons used remain unverified. Explosions were heard during air raid warnings early Saturday, underscoring the intensity of the attacks.

Meanwhile, in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, Russian shelling resulted in significant civilian casualties. Local authorities reported that 11 civilians were killed and 43 wounded, with fatalities occurring in towns like Selydove and Pokrovsk. The conflict in Donetsk has escalated, with Ukrainian and Russian forces engaging in clashes near Pokrovsk, impacting civilian areas and prompting strategic military maneuvers.

The Ukrainian General Staff highlighted numerous Russian military actions across Ukraine, including rocket strikes, airstrikes, and the use of devastating "glide bombs." These attacks continue to escalate tensions and inflict severe damage on civilian infrastructure.

On the Russian side, two civilians were wounded in the southern Belgorod region after Ukrainian forces shelled a border town. The Russian Defense Ministry reported downing eight drones over Kursk and Belgorod regions, illustrating ongoing military engagements along the border.

In Krasnodar province near Crimea, falling debris from drones caused fires at an oil depot and damaged a cellphone tower, highlighting the spillover effects of the conflict into Russian territory. Despite the significant material damage, there were no immediate reports of casualties in Russia.

The escalation in northern Ukraine and Donetsk underscores the volatile situation on the ground, with both sides continuing to exchange fire and escalate military operations, exacerbating civilian suffering and regional instability.
