The Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club (ADEC) has unveiled a new therapeutic riding program aimed at supporting People of Determination, specifically designed for children and young adults with various conditions, including autism, developmental disabilities, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and emotional or behavioral issues.
This special initiative seeks to improve participants' emotional, physical, and mental well-being through meaningful interactions with horses. Under the guidance of Jessie Ihrcke, a certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, the program is structured to facilitate personal growth, skill development, and confidence-building through engaging equine-assisted activities.
Each session lasts 45 minutes and is tailored to meet the individual needs of each participant. The program begins with riders grooming and caring for their assigned horse, which helps foster a sense of responsibility and connection. Following this, participants prepare the horse for riding, learning about the equipment and ensuring their mount is ready for the session ahead.

When the riders feel prepared, they mount their horses and engage in various riding activities tailored to their skill levels and therapeutic needs. The sessions emphasize movement and coordination, allowing participants to explore their abilities in a supportive environment. After riding, participants are encouraged to interact with the horses in a more relaxed setting by feeding and grazing, further enhancing the bond between rider and horse.
His Excellency Ali Al Shaiba, Director General of ADEC, emphasized the importance of this program, stating, "Our Therapeutic Riding program is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and community well-being. By providing a safe and supportive environment, we are empowering People of Determination to discover their potential, develop essential skills, and build the confidence to thrive in all aspects of their lives."
Jessie Ihrcke echoed these sentiments, noting the unique benefits that horses offer as therapeutic partners. "Horses respond in the moment, which makes them wonderful therapeutic companions," she said. "By interacting with horses, our riders can experience a range of beneficial sensory stimulations while also developing valuable life skills, such as confidence, empathy, and flexible thinking."
The launch of this therapeutic riding program by ADEC reflects a broader commitment to creating inclusive opportunities for individuals with diverse needs. By harnessing the healing power of horses, the program aims to provide participants with enriching experiences that promote personal growth and emotional resilience. As the sessions unfold, the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club looks forward to witnessing the positive impact this initiative will have on the lives of People of Determination and their families.
