Russian missiles and drones struck Ukrainian targets late Monday night, resulting in over 50 deaths and hundreds of injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The most devastating attack occurred at the Poltava Military Communications Institute, where two ballistic missiles hit the institute and a nearby hospital. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that at least 51 people were killed and 217 injured in this assault.
Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday morning that he had ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. "I have ordered a full and prompt investigation into all the circumstances of what happened," he said via his official Telegram channel. The attack has been described as a "stunning tragedy" by First Lady Olena Zelenska, who echoed the sentiments of many Ukrainians grappling with the fallout from the assault.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported that one of the military academy's buildings was partially destroyed, catching people off guard as they attempted to reach bomb shelters. The rapid onset of the attack—missiles hitting approximately two minutes after launch—left little time for evacuation. Rescue efforts are ongoing as many remain trapped under the rubble. "It is known that there are people under the rubble of the destroyed building," Zelenskyy said. "Everything is being done to save as many lives as possible."

Valeriy Parkhomenko, the deputy mayor of Poltava, indicated that there may be survivors still trapped beneath the debris. He noted that classes were in session at the academy during the strikes, which compounded the difficulty of reaching safety.
In response to the broader attack, which involved three Iskander ballistic missiles from occupied Crimea, one Kh-59/69 air-launched missile from Russia’s Kursk region, and 35 Iranian-made Shahed drones, Ukraine's air defenses managed to intercept 27 drones, although six were lost. The Russian assault also targeted the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, where a missile strike on a hotel complex killed a 38-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son. The father and a 13-year-old girl were injured but survived. Additionally, a missile attack in Dnipro resulted in one death and six injuries.
In response to Russia's escalating attacks, Ukraine is advocating for more advanced Western weaponry to counteract the ongoing threats. President Zelenskyy has urged Western allies, particularly the U.S., to provide capabilities that would enable strikes against Russian airfields and launch sites.
President Joe Biden condemned the attack, calling it "deplorable" and affirming the United States' support for Ukraine. "This assault is a tragic reminder of Putin’s ongoing and outrageous attempts to break the will of a free people," Biden said in a statement. "The United States will continue to stand with them—including providing the air defense systems and capabilities they need to protect their country."
The recent developments underscore the escalating conflict and the severe impact of Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian life.
