Russia attack the center of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, early in 2025, killing two people. This attack has made officials in Ukraine very angry with Moscow.
The attack happened just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky promised in his New Year message to do everything he can to end the war in 2025.

Ukraine’s emergency services said two people were killed, six were injured, and four people were pulled out from the rubble after Russian drones hit the city.
Local officials said the damage was caused by falling debris, meaning the drones were likely shot down before hitting their targets.
Journalists in Kyiv heard loud explosions early in the morning.
Ukrainian officials said the Russian drones hit the Pechersky area, which is home to the president’s palace and government buildings. Apartment buildings were also hit, and the central bank of Ukraine confirmed that one of its buildings was damaged.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had threatened to attack the heart of Kyiv recently, saying it would be in response to Ukraine using American weapons on Russian land.
Zelensky criticized the attack, saying on Telegram, "Even on New Year’s night, Russia only cares about hurting Ukraine."
In total, 111 Russian drones were fired at Ukraine. Ukraine’s air defense shot down or disabled 109 of them.
Both Ukraine and Russia have been launching more aerial attacks recently, trying to gain an advantage before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. Trump has said he could make a peace deal very quickly, which makes people in Ukraine worry that they may have to agree to terms that favor Russia.
