The first woman to set foot on the Moon will don a designer spacesuit, thanks to a groundbreaking collaboration between NASA and Italian luxury fashion house Prada. This innovative spacesuit is part of NASA’s Artemis III mission, which aims to land astronauts at the lunar South Pole in 2026, marking a pivotal moment in space exploration history. This mission not only signifies NASA’s return to lunar exploration but also heralds the first time a woman will walk on the Moon.

The newly designed spacesuit, named the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), strikes a balance between cutting-edge technology and a nod to the classic design of the suits worn by Apollo astronauts over 50 years ago. The suit's outer layer is primarily white, engineered to reflect heat while being resilient against the extreme temperatures of the lunar South Pole. However, it showcases Prada’s distinctive touch with sleek grey and red stripes, reminiscent of the brand’s signature aesthetics, notably inspired by its Luna Rossa America’s Cup yacht.
While the AxEMU is visually striking, it is primarily crafted for performance, durability, and adaptability. The suit is designed to withstand the harshest conditions in one of the most challenging environments in space, ensuring both safety and functionality for astronauts, regardless of gender. The unisex design allows for adjustments to accommodate various body sizes, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of space apparel.
The Artemis III mission will be NASA's first astronaut Moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. Prior to this landmark event, Artemis II, scheduled for September 2025, will serve as the first crewed Artemis mission to orbit the Moon. Christina Koch, the only woman on the Artemis II crew, is poised to make history as the first woman to step onto the lunar surface, contributing to a narrative that has, until now, seen only 12 men walk on the Moon.
Matt Ondler, president of Axiom Space, highlighted the complexity involved in designing the spacesuit, referring to it as an "extreme engineering" achievement. The AxEMU has been rigorously tested through underwater simulations that replicate the lunar environment. With astronauts expected to conduct moonwalks lasting up to eight hours, the suit must provide both protection and comfort in temperatures that can range from a sweltering 54 degrees Celsius to a frigid minus 203 degrees Celsius.
NASA's focus on exploring craters at the Moon’s South Pole—regions that have never seen sunlight—holds the potential for significant discoveries, including frozen water. These cratered areas present some of the coldest conditions known to humanity, necessitating meticulous attention to detail in the suit’s design.
Russell Ralston, the spacesuit program manager at Axiom Space, explained that the new suit combines elements of science, engineering, and art to create the ultimate garment for future moonwalkers. It is engineered to shield astronauts from the harsh lunar environment, providing necessary radiation protection, oxygen, and power for extended moonwalks, ensuring they are equipped for the challenges that lie ahead.
