Alex Ovechkin did not score in the game on Thursday night, so he still has 889 career goals. He needs six more goals to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. But even though he did not score, Ovechkin made a special moment happen after the game in Minnesota.
When the game ended, and Washington lost 4-2 to the Minnesota Wild, Ovechkin made sure all of his teammates came back to the ice to shake hands with Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury, a famous goalie, is expected to retire after this season. Ovechkin was the first to greet him, and the two shared a hug and laughed together at center ice.

Fleury, who has played 21 seasons in the NHL, was on the Wild’s bench the whole game, while Filip Gustavsson was the one playing as goalie for Minnesota. Even though Fleury did not play, Ovechkin knew this was the last time they would be on the same ice.
In the morning, Ovechkin reminded his teammates that this game was special. Over the years, Ovechkin and Fleury had played against each other many times, especially when Fleury was with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ovechkin scored 28 goals in 47 games against Fleury—more than against any other goalie in his career.
Washington’s coach Spencer Carbery praised Ovechkin for his respect toward Fleury.
“He has played many big games against the Capitals and Ovechkin,” Carbery said. “It was a nice way to say goodbye and show respect for his amazing career.”
Washington player Dylan Strome also said Fleury is a great person and deserves this kind of respect.
“Everyone knows he is one of the best people in hockey,” Strome said. “So showing him a little respect at the end of the game is very important.”
The Wild players also appreciated what Ovechkin did. They know how much fans love Fleury, no matter which team he plays for.
“Everywhere we go, we see signs for Fleury. People love him, and they love playing against him,” said Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson. “I don’t think anyone can say a bad word about him.”
Jonas Brodin, a Wild defenseman, said playing with Fleury is something he will always remember.
“It’s great to see. I’m happy for him,” Brodin said. “He’s a great guy and one of the best I have ever played with. Someday, when I stop playing hockey, I will always remember that I played with him.”
Ovechkin may not have scored in this game, but his actions showed why he is one of hockey’s most respected leaders. As he continues to chase Gretzky’s record, moments like this prove that hockey is not just about scoring—it is also about respect and honoring great players.
