Nvidia, the global leader in chip manufacturing and artificial intelligence, has launched a new lightweight AI model specifically designed for the Hindi language, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to cater to the fast-growing demand for AI technologies in India. This new development was announced on Thursday, with the company highlighting how it aims to support businesses in India looking to leverage AI in a multilingual environment.

The model, named Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B, has 4 billion parameters, making it a compact yet powerful tool for companies interested in building their own AI systems. Nvidia revealed that the model was trained using a mix of real-world Hindi data, synthetic Hindi data, and English data, offering a versatile resource for businesses. This allows companies to create applications that can understand and generate content in Hindi, which is spoken by a large portion of India’s 1.4 billion population.
Nvidia's initiative comes at a time when India is emerging as a crucial market for AI technologies, and the demand for tools that cater to local languages has never been greater. Although English is widely used in business and technology sectors, only about 10% of the Indian population speaks the language. This makes Hindi, along with other regional languages, a critical focus for businesses aiming to broaden their reach and provide inclusive services.
As part of Nvidia's outreach in India, Chief Executive Jensen Huang is scheduled to meet with Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries and the wealthiest man in Asia, at a conference in Mumbai. This discussion is likely to explore how India’s vast market can adopt AI more effectively, leveraging Nvidia’s advanced technologies.
Tech Mahindra, a leading Indian IT services company, is the first to adopt Nvidia’s new model. It is using Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B to build a custom AI model called Indus 2.0, which is focused on Hindi and its many dialects. This collaboration underscores the growing trend of companies in India investing in AI solutions tailored to local languages, which can power customer service bots, content translation tools, and other AI-driven applications.
Nvidia’s approach with small language models like Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B differs from larger, more general-purpose models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4, which powers ChatGPT. While larger models require vast amounts of data and computational power, small language models are designed to be more cost-effective and resource-efficient, making them an attractive option for companies that may not have the capacity to handle massive AI projects.
The launch of this Hindi AI model also coincides with India’s broader push to develop its own semiconductor and AI industries. As global chipmakers like Nvidia deepen their presence in India, the country is positioning itself as a future hub for AI and chip technology. Nvidia, which has been operating in India for nearly two decades, has already established engineering and design centers in cities such as Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
Nvidia’s latest AI offering reflects the company’s commitment to India’s evolving technology landscape, as the nation works to balance its growing digital economy with the need to cater to a linguistically diverse population. With the introduction of Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B, Nvidia hopes to empower more companies to innovate and serve the unique needs of the Indian market, helping drive the adoption of AI technologies across various sectors.
