Microsoft is changing the way it works with technology by making its own models for smart systems, which are different from the ones made by OpenAI. This change means Microsoft will not depend only on OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT. These new models are called "MAI," and they are made to help with solving hard problems and thinking through different steps.

For a long time, Microsoft has been using OpenAI's technology, especially in their product called Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft has put a lot of money, around $13.75 billion, into OpenAI since 2019. But now, Microsoft is also testing models from other companies, like xAI, Meta, and DeepSeek. They want to see if these models can work instead of OpenAI's technology.
The MAI models are special because they can solve hard problems and break them down into smaller steps. Microsoft has already started testing these models in its Microsoft 365 Copilot product. They are also thinking about letting other companies use MAI through something called an API (which is a tool other companies can use in their own apps) by the end of the year.
Microsoft wants to not depend only on one company, so it is making its own models. When Microsoft 365 Copilot started in 2023, it used OpenAI’s GPT-4. Now, Microsoft is trying to use a mix of its own models and models from other companies. This will help Microsoft save money, work faster, and have more control over its technology.
Earlier reports showed that Microsoft is already using other models in Copilot. Even though Microsoft still works with OpenAI, the relationship has changed. Microsoft no longer has the only right to provide OpenAI's cloud services. Now OpenAI can also use cloud services from other companies like Oracle.
As Microsoft builds its own models, it could change the way smart systems are used in the future. If Microsoft is successful, its new models could help other companies use smart technology in their own products, leading to new ways of solving problems with technology.
