Vice President Kamala Harris assessed President Joe Biden's performance in the critical debate against Republican rival Donald Trump, acknowledging a "slow start" but noting a "strong finish." Speaking in a post-debate interview with CNN, Harris addressed Biden's initial performance, acknowledging it was sluggish but emphasized the importance of evaluating both candidates based on their entire tenures in office.
"It was a slow start, that's obvious to everyone. I'm not going to debate that point," Harris said candidly. "I'm not going to spend all night with you talking about the last 90 minutes when I've been watching the last three-and-a-half years of performance," she added, urging voters to consider the broader context.
President Biden, 81, displayed a hesitant performance during the debate, where Trump, 78, aggressively attacked him with statements, some false, amidst personal insults ahead of the November election. The debate, spanning a wide range of issues from reproductive rights to economic management, underscored the deep divisions between the candidates and their personal animosity.

Despite attempts by Biden's supporters to downplay his unsteady showing, attributed by White House officials to a cold, concerns over his fitness to serve another term intensified. The debate, while failing to significantly alter longstanding deadlock in opinion polls, highlighted Biden's struggle with a hoarse voice and hesitant delivery contrasted with Trump's forcefulness.
Despite a shaky start, Biden regained composure midway through, launching a pointed attack on Trump's past conviction for concealing hush money payments, labeling him a "felon." The debate, an unprecedented clash between a sitting president and a former president on CNN, occurred over four months before Election Day, showcasing the intensity and early start to the presidential campaign season.
