Washington: Criticizing the recent annual report from the USCIRF for its portrayal of India's religious freedom situation, an Indian expatriates' think-tank has urged the US State Department to dismiss it, citing biases and flawed conclusions.
In its annual report, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) recommended designating India as a "Country of Particular Concern (CPC)," alleging a deterioration in religious freedom within the nation.
India promptly denounced the USCIRF report, accusing the body of interfering in its electoral processes and perpetuating propaganda against the country.
The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) released a statement characterizing the USCIRF report as biased, presenting incomplete data and erroneous conclusions.

Khanderao Kand, Chief of Policy and Strategy at FIIDS, criticized the USCIRF's report for its reliance on partial data, omission of relevant facts, and flawed interpretations. He emphasized that the report failed to acknowledge India's positive developments in religious freedom and unfairly labeled it as a country of particular concern.
FIIDS highlighted the USCIRF's contrasting analysis of India from the previous year, indicating significant improvements, but noted that the recent report failed to acknowledge these positive trends.
The USCIRF's report was criticized for its selective focus on isolated incidents, its misrepresentation of India's efforts to regulate foreign funding through the FCRA, and its failure to recognize India's constitutional guarantees of religious freedom.
FIIDS raised concerns about the USCIRF's recommendations and urged the US Department of State to carefully evaluate and reject them, considering the importance of US-India relations.
The organization emphasized the need for unbiased assessments and highlighted India's status as a major economy and a key ally of the US.
