In a recent ruling, a Federal Court Judge has declared Trump Tower Chicago a public nuisance and an environmental threat, primarily due to its cooling water intake system that has led to the deaths of thousands of fish. The landmark skyscraper, located at 401 N. Wabash Ave. and opened in 2009, has faced legal scrutiny for alleged breaches of environmental regulations.

The lawsuit against Trump International Hotel and Tower was spearheaded by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and various environmental groups. They contended that the hotel's management failed to comply with environmental laws and did not maintain proper water discharge records. Last year, they sought judicial intervention from the Cook County Circuit Court.
According to reports from the Chicago Sun-Times, Judge Thaddeus L. Wilson of the Cook County Circuit Court has ruled that the Trump Tower’s cooling water intake system is a significant public nuisance. The system, which extracts approximately 20 million gallons of water daily from the Chicago River, was found to be responsible for the deaths of numerous fish due to its inadequate filtration mechanisms.
The complaint alleges that Trump Tower has operated without a valid state water permit and has not adhered to the required standards for water discharge levels. The building's intake system has been criticized for its failure to prevent the unintended capture and death of aquatic life.
Judge Wilson’s ruling highlighted that the operation of the intake system "substantially and unreasonably interferes" with the public’s right to enjoy recreational activities in the Chicago River. Margaret Frisbie, executive director of Friends of the Chicago River, stated that the ruling was a significant step towards rectifying the environmental damage caused by the building’s operations. "This decision brings us near the end of a six-year journey," Frisbie noted.
Sierra Club Illinois director Jack Darin emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance with environmental regulations moving forward.
The next court hearing is scheduled for November. If the parties involved do not reach an agreement, the court will determine the necessary measures to enforce compliance and address the environmental concerns associated with Trump Tower’s water intake system.
