Five Missiles Hit Near Ship in Red Sea in Suspected Attack by Yemen's Houthi Rebels

A ship traversing the Red Sea encountered multiple missile strikes on Friday, likely launched by Yemen's Houthi rebels, according to authorities. The incident occurred near the coast of Hodeida, a port city controlled by the rebels, with five missiles landing near the vessel. Fortunately, the strikes caused no damage, as confirmed by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center (UKTMO).

The Houthis have not immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, a typical delay in acknowledgment that can span hours or days following such incidents.

This latest attack marks a continuation of the rebels' campaign targeting the strategic maritime route, having previously launched missiles and drones at more than 60 vessels. The attacks have resulted in casualties, including four sailors killed, and involved the seizure of one vessel while sinking two others since November.

In response to the ongoing attacks, a US-led airstrike campaign has been targeting Houthi positions since January. The rebels reported that airstrikes on May 30 resulted in at least 16 deaths and 42 injuries.

While the Houthis claim their attacks are aimed at ships linked to Israel, the United States, or Britain, many targeted vessels have minimal or no connection to the conflicts involving Israel and Hamas, including those destined for Iran.

Recently, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for Monday's attack on the MSC Sarah V, a Liberian-flagged container ship managed by a Greek company. The rebels also asserted the use of a new hypersonic ballistic missile in this assault, targeting a ship farther from shore than most previous attacks in the Gulf of Aden.

Further incidents involving suspected Houthi attacks include one on Wednesday in the Gulf of Aden, where a Houthi claim is pending. Additionally, another attack occurred on Thursday in the Red Sea, further underscoring the ongoing security challenges posed by the rebel group in maritime regions.
