Five Injured in Amsterdam Stabbing Near Dam Square, Suspect Arrested

Five people were injured in a stabbing near the central Dam Square in Amsterdam, according to the police. The victims include two Americans, a man from Poland, a woman from Belgium, and a Dutch woman. The youngest victim is 19 years old, while the oldest is 73.

The suspect, a man, was caught with the help of bystanders. He was taken to the hospital with a leg injury. Police said they are still investigating the motive behind the attack. However, they believe the suspect might have targeted people randomly.

Authorities Speak Out
Amsterdam’s Mayor, Femke Halsema, said that the investigation is in full swing. She expressed her concern for the victims, saying, "Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and loved ones."

Details of the Incident
The injured victims include:

  • A 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man from the US.
  • A 26-year-old man from Poland.
  • A 73-year-old woman from Belgium.
  • A 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam.

Police said they received several reports of a stabbing around 3:30 PM local time (2:30 PM GMT). Officers quickly arrived at the scene and found five injured people at different spots around Sint Nicolaasstraat, near the city center.

With help from people nearby, police were able to catch the suspect soon after the incident.

The Scene at Dam Square
The authorities sealed off a large area around the Royal Palace in Dam Square. An emergency helicopter landed at the scene.

Dam Square is a well-known tourist spot located in the heart of Amsterdam’s historic district.

Eyewitness Accounts
A witness told the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that they heard a "chilling scream" before panic spread through the area.

Another witness, a shop assistant, said she heard loud shouting and screaming. She saw people running in fear.

Amsterdam-based outlet Het Parool reported that one witness went to check on a girl after hearing the commotion. As someone called for an ambulance, he noticed a knife "sticking out of the girl’s back, between her shoulders."

Call for Evidence
Police are asking people who may have recorded videos or taken photos of the incident to share them as evidence.

Initially, authorities said four people were injured. However, they later confirmed that five people were wounded, along with the suspect.
