Crew-10 Astronauts Set to Replace Sunita Williams, Butch Wilmore on ISS

A new team of astronauts, Crew-10, is traveling to the International Space Station (ISS) for a six-month stay. They will take the place of NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry "Butch" Wilmore, along with Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. The Crew-10 team will reach the ISS on March 15 at 11:30 PM ET (March 16 at 9:00 AM IST). Their journey began when SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch happened at 7:03 PM ET on Friday (4:33 AM IST on Saturday). Around 10 minutes later, the Crew Dragon capsule separated from the rocket and started moving towards the ISS.

The new team includes Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, both NASA astronauts and military pilots. It also has Takuya Onishi, a Japanese astronaut and former airline pilot, and Kirill Peskov, a Russian cosmonaut and former airline pilot. When Crew-10 arrives, there will be 11 astronauts on the ISS for a short time. Before Crew-9 leaves, there will be a two-day handover time, where Williams, Wilmore, Hague, and Gorbunov will teach Crew-10 about the station’s work. Crew-9 is planned to return to Earth on March 19, but their trip will depend on weather conditions near Florida, where they will land in the ocean.

Even though crew changes happen often, this mission is very important because Williams and Wilmore have been in space for nine months. They came to the ISS in June 2023 on Boeing’s Starliner capsule, but the spacecraft had problems. Because of this, they could not come back on time. NASA is now working to bring them back safely. They will return in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule that is already at the ISS. They will travel with astronauts who arrived last September on a SpaceX rescue mission.

Crew-10 will stay on the ISS for six months and do many science studies. They will test how fire spreads in space, study how space travel affects the human body, and work on better navigation for future Moon missions. Their work will help improve space travel in the future. Crew-10 will remain on the ISS until fall 2025, making sure important space research continues.
