Dubai, UAE – On July 28 every year, people around the world come together to recognize World Hepatitis Day, a major global health campaign that aims to raise awareness about viral hepatitis. This silent but deadly disease affects over 300 million people globally and often remains unnoticed until it causes serious liver damage.
World Hepatitis Day also marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, the scientist who discovered the hepatitis B virus and developed the first vaccine for it. His groundbreaking work has saved countless lives, and this day is dedicated to continuing that legacy through education, prevention, and early detection.
Hepatitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the liver. The liver is a vital organ responsible for filtering toxins from the body, helping digestion, and storing energy. When the liver is inflamed, it can no longer perform these functions properly.
Hepatitis is commonly caused by a viral infection, but it can also result from excessive alcohol consumption, certain medications, toxic substances, or autoimmune diseases.
There are five main types of hepatitis viruses:
Among these, Hepatitis B and C are considered the most serious because they can lead to chronic liver disease, liver failure, or even liver cancer if not treated.
One of the greatest challenges with hepatitis is that many people live with it without knowing. The disease can go unnoticed for years because symptoms often appear only when serious damage has already occurred.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO):
Over 300 million people worldwide are living with hepatitis.
Each year, more than 1.1 million people die due to complications related to hepatitis.
The majority of these deaths could have been prevented with early diagnosis and treatment.
World Hepatitis Day serves as a reminder to:
Get tested early
Receive vaccination where available
Follow safe medical and lifestyle practices
Spread awareness to others
The official theme for this year’s campaign is “Hepatitis Can’t Wait.” This theme highlights the urgent need for action. It emphasizes that people living with hepatitis cannot wait for testing, treatment, or awareness campaigns.
From parents waiting to get their children vaccinated, to patients unaware they are infected, and health systems working under pressure — everyone has a role to play, and there is no time to waste.
In the United Arab Emirates, hepatitis is a public health priority. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has taken several major steps to reduce hepatitis cases and educate the public.
Key initiatives include:
Free vaccination programs, particularly for hepatitis B
Regular health screenings and blood testing in both public and private clinics
Public awareness campaigns across schools, workplaces, and communities
Promotion of safe blood transfusion practices and sterile medical equipment use in clinics and hospitals
The UAE’s efforts are aligned with global health goals and are supported by a strong healthcare infrastructure.
While hepatitis is serious, the good news is that it is often preventable. Here are some simple steps to protect yourself and your loved ones:
If you are wondering how you can contribute to the cause, here are a few ways:
Even small actions can have a big impact when it comes to public health.
The World Health Organization has set a global target to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat by the year 2030. This includes:
With its advanced medical system and strong public health policies, the UAE is well-positioned to contribute to this global goal.
World Hepatitis Day is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a chance to raise awareness, protect lives, and take responsibility for our health and the health of those around us.
Whether you're a student, a parent, a healthcare worker, or simply someone who wants to make a difference, you can help. By staying informed, getting tested, and encouraging others to do the same, we can all be part of the solution.
