On Wednesday, the United States military disclosed its successful interception of four drones launched by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen, targeting a US warship navigating the Red Sea.
US Central Command, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), affirmed that its forces had "engaged and neutralized four long-range unmanned aerial systems" around 2 am local time in Sanaa (2300 GMT). The statement emphasized that there were no reported injuries or damages to US or coalition vessels.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the statement underscored that the intercepted weapons posed an immediate threat to both merchant ships and US Navy vessels in the area.
"The actions taken aim to safeguard freedom of navigation and enhance the security of international waters for US Navy and merchant fleets," the statement continued.
The incident comes in the wake of heightened tensions in the region, with the Houthis launching a series of drone and missile attacks targeting vessels in the Red Sea. These actions, purportedly carried out in solidarity with Palestinians during Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza, have raised concerns about the safety of crucial maritime trade routes.
In response to these threats, US and British forces have undertaken measures to counter the Houthi attacks. In turn, the Houthis have declared American and British interests as legitimate targets, further escalating tensions in the region
