The United States launched overnight airstrikes on multiple targets in Yemen, starting around midnight on Sunday. The strikes hit several locations, including the capital, Sanaa, and the Houthi stronghold province of Saada.
According to the Houthi-run Health Ministry, at least 53 people were killed in the attacks, including five women and two children. More than 100 others were injured in Sanaa alone.
The US has increased its attacks on Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels. On Saturday, President Donald Trump warned that the US would use ‘overwhelming lethal force’ against the militants if they continued their attacks on international ships in the Red Sea. The Houthis claim they are targeting these ships to show support for Gaza amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, another Iranian-backed group.

The latest US airstrikes in Sanaa and other areas have led to many casualties. The Houthis have also vowed to escalate their attacks in response, marking one of the most intense confrontations since the war in Gaza began in October 2023.
President Trump made it clear that the Houthis must stop attacking ships in the Red Sea, a critical global trade route. He warned that if the attacks continued, the US would strike back harder than ever before.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the military action would continue until the Houthis no longer had the ability to attack international ships.
The Houthis have been attacking international shipping in the Red Sea for months. They have already sunk two vessels, saying their actions are meant to support Palestinians in Gaza. Rubio stated that, over the past 18 months, the Houthis had directly attacked the US Navy 174 times and targeted commercial shipping 145 times using advanced guided weapons.
These attacks had paused since the ceasefire in Gaza began in January. However, last week, the Houthis announced they would start attacking Israeli vessels again after Israel restricted humanitarian aid to Gaza. Despite this threat, no ship has been attacked since then.
On Sunday, Michael Waltz, Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser, the US strikes had successfully targeted and killed multiple Houthi leaders. However, he did not provide names or specific details.
Marco Rubio also confirmed that several Houthi military facilities had been destroyed in the strikes.
In response, the Houthis have declared they will fight back against the US and meet force with force. On Sunday, they claimed to have launched missiles and drones at the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group.
Reports indicate that the Houthis fired 11 drones and at least one missile over a 12-hour period, starting at midnight local time. However, the US military intercepted ten of the drones with Air Force fighter jets, and a Navy F/A-18 fighter jet shot down the last one. The missile fell into the water, far from the ship, causing no damage.
The Trump administration has stated that it will hold Iran responsible for the Houthis' actions. However, Iran has denied involvement in the attacks. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has also said that the US cannot ‘dictate’ its foreign policy to Tehran.
