UN Warns of Potential 'Full-Scale' Conflict on Israel-Lebanon Border, Amid Presence of Indian Peacekeepers

Tensions have escalated dramatically along the Lebanon-Israel border, with civilians bearing the brunt of ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel. The United Nations has issued a stark warning about the heightened risk of a full-scale war in the region, where 901 Indian peacekeepers are stationed as part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Following an Israeli drone strike that killed a senior Hezbollah commander in Southern Lebanon, Hezbollah retaliated by launching a barrage of 100 rockets into Israel. The group, backed by Iran, has vowed to continue these attacks in solidarity with Hamas, which has been under Israeli assault in Gaza.

The situation has deteriorated since Hamas initiated attacks on Israel on October 7, prompting Israeli retaliation in Gaza. This escalation has led to significant civilian displacement, with approximately 60,000 Lebanese and 20,000 Israelis forced to flee their homes near the border.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concern over Israel's compromised sovereignty in its northern regions due to the ongoing conflict, highlighting the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation.

Meanwhile, the UN emphasized the critical role of diplomacy in resolving the crisis and reiterated the importance of a political solution. UNIFIL, tasked with maintaining peace and security in the volatile Blue Line area separating Lebanon and Israel, continues to operate as a buffer between the conflicting parties.

In Lebanon, where Hezbollah holds considerable influence despite the government's limited control, efforts are underway to support UNIFIL's mission and promote de-escalation. International diplomatic efforts have so far prevented a broader conflict, but tensions remain high in the region.

In addition to UNIFIL, the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) is also active in maintaining the ceasefire between Israel and Syria, with 202 Indian troops deployed for peacekeeping duties.
