Severe Storm Expected to Strike Eastern India and Bangladesh Regions

Cyclone Dana, currently forming over the Bay of Bengal, is intensifying and is expected to evolve into a severe cyclonic storm, with wind speeds reaching up to 120 kph (74 mph). The cyclone is likely to make landfall late Thursday, hitting the eastern coast of India and southern Bangladesh, according to India's Meteorological Department.

In anticipation of the storm, over 200 trains have been canceled in Odisha, a state frequently affected by cyclones. Local officials have begun extensive preparations, including plans for evacuations in vulnerable areas. "We are issuing public announcements and will begin evacuating residents in high-risk zones after lunch," said Dilip Routrai, a district administrative officer.

The Indian weather office has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Odisha over the next three days. The storm poses significant threats, with warnings of potential damage to homes, roads, crops, and power lines. Flooding and landslides are also possible due to the anticipated heavy rains.

Schools across Odisha have been ordered to close until Friday, and fishermen have been strongly advised to stay ashore as the seas will be dangerously rough.

In Bangladesh, authorities have issued similar warnings. Fishermen along the southern coast have been alerted, and ports have been asked to remain on high alert as Cyclone Dana approaches. The coastal regions of both nations are on standby for emergency measures.

In India's West Bengal, which shares a border with Bangladesh, disaster relief teams have been mobilized. These teams are equipped with tools to clear trees and equipment to manage power restoration and infrastructure repairs, ensuring they are prepared to respond quickly once the cyclone passes.
