Abu Dhabi Film Commission Boosts Production Rebate to Attract Blockbusters

The Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC), which operates under Abu Dhabi’s Creative Media Authority (CMA), has announced an increase in its film production rebate from 30% to a starting rate of 35% for all qualified productions commencing on January 1, 2025. This enhancement is part of a broader strategy aimed at stimulating growth, attracting strategic investments, and reinforcing the film and television production industry in the emirate.

The initiative is designed to attract more productions from major film industries, including Hollywood, Bollywood, and regional Arab filmmakers, to choose Abu Dhabi as their shooting location. This influx of film and television projects is expected to bolster the local economy by enhancing sectors such as transport, logistics, and accommodation, while also showcasing the emirate as a premier destination for tourism.

Mohamed Dobay, the Acting Director General of the CMA, emphasized the significance of the film and production industry, stating, “The importance of the film and production industry continues to grow under the vision and guidance of our wise leadership. We are proud to have been the first destination to offer a rebate scheme and are a regional pioneer with a proven track record. The updated financial rebate support will ensure we continue attracting international producers and directors from all over the world and become known as a leading destination for film and TV production both globally and regionally. This new rebate system is based on global best practices and will ensure we bring more of Abu Dhabi to the world through individual content consumption.”

Dobay noted that this adjustment is part of a comprehensive review and enhancement of all creative industry verticals in Abu Dhabi, ensuring a more appealing offering to support a vibrant industry that significantly contributes to the region's economy.

Sameer Al Jaberi, Head of ADFC, highlighted the success of the rebate scheme since its inception in 2013, stating, “More than 150 major productions have benefited from the offering. This generates a huge impact on our economy as independently verified research shows that for every dirham paid through the scheme, more than three dirhams flow back into the economy through hosting large-scale productions in the emirate.” He further emphasized that these visiting productions offer invaluable learning and training opportunities for young creatives, ensuring a self-sustaining industry for future generations of storytellers.

As the launch date for the enhanced rebate approaches, ADFC plans to provide additional information to its existing production industry database. The new initiative aims to strengthen an already robust ecosystem, which boasts over 800 locally based media companies and a talent pool of approximately 1,000 freelancers, alongside numerous young individuals seeking training and internship opportunities.
