Jaswant Narwal, the Chief Crown Prosecutor overseeing the Crown Prosecution Service London Homicide Unit, has decided against pursuing criminal charges in a tragic incident where an Indian-origin schoolgirl was killed in a freak accident. Nuria Sajjad, along with another schoolmate, lost their lives when a Land Rover driven by Claire Freemantle crashed into their school in Wimbledon, London, last July. The driver had suffered an epileptic seizure, causing her to lose control of the vehicle.
After a thorough investigation, Narwal described the incident as an "unthinkable tragedy" but concluded that it was not in the public interest to proceed with a criminal prosecution. Medical experts confirmed that this was the first seizure experienced by Freemantle, with no prior diagnosed medical condition indicating a risk.
"The driver of the vehicle had an epileptic seizure behind the wheel, which caused her to lose control of the vehicle which then drove into the school," Narwal stated. "Because there is nothing to suggest the driver could have done anything to predict or prevent this tragedy, it is not in the public interest to pursue a criminal prosecution."

Throughout the process, the CPS consulted extensively with the families of the victims, ensuring they were informed of the case's progress and the rationale behind the decision. The families, deeply affected by the loss, expressed their disappointment, stating, "justice has neither been done, nor has been seen to be done today."
Claire Freemantle, in her mid-40s, has voluntarily surrendered her driving license and must remain seizure-free for a year before reapplying. The incident had left Nuria's mother, Smera Chohan, seriously injured as they were preparing to take a picture together outside the school.
The tragic event has had a profound impact on the school community and all those involved, with ongoing support and condolences extended to the affected families.
