Iran will hold a runoff presidential election to replace the late hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi, as announced by election spokesman Mohsen Eslami on Saturday. The initial round of voting did not result in an outright winner, necessitating a runoff between the top two candidates: reformist Masoud Pezeshkian and hard-liner Saeed Jalili.
According to Eslami, out of 24.5 million votes cast, Pezeshkian secured 10.4 million while Jalili received 9.4 million. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf garnered 3.3 million votes, and Shiite cleric Mostafa Pourmohammadi received over 206,000 votes. Iranian law mandates that a candidate must receive more than 50% of all votes to win outright; failing which, a runoff is scheduled a week later. This has occurred only once before in Iran's history, in 2005.
Eslami noted that formal approval from the Guardian Council is pending, but there were no immediate challenges from other candidates. Notably, women and proponents of radical change have been barred from running, a practice consistent since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The election also lacks oversight from internationally recognized monitors, prompting calls for boycotts from figures like Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi and Mir Hossein Mousavi, a leader of the 2009 Green Movement protests who remains under house arrest.

Criticism has been directed at Pezeshkian for being perceived as another government-approved candidate. A state TV documentary highlighted concerns among some Iranians that his candidacy does not signify genuine reform, paralleling sentiments of discontent seen during the 1979 revolution.
Raisi, whose death in a helicopter crash on May 19 triggered the election, was viewed as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Known for his involvement in mass executions in 1988 and crackdowns on dissent, Raisi's legacy contrasts sharply with ongoing regional tensions, including Iran's involvement in conflicts like the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. In April, Iran launched its first direct attack on Israel over the Gaza conflict, amidst heightened activities by militias Tehran supports across the Middle East.
Despite broader geopolitical unrest, election-related violence was limited to an incident in Sistan and Baluchestan province, where gunmen attacked a van transporting ballot boxes, killing two police officers and injuring others. The province is regularly troubled by clashes between security forces and militant groups like Jaish al-Adl, as well as narcotics trafficking.
The election also occurs amid Iran's continued uranium enrichment close to weapons-grade levels, maintaining a stockpile capable of producing multiple nuclear weapons if pursued.
